Mana Bar responds to Queensland Government Inquiry into Alcohol-Related Violence Report
Monday, 19th April 2010 – The recent Queensland Government Inquiry into Alcohol-Related Violence suggests that violent interactive video games are potentially a cause of youth violence, stating that “the choice to brutally stab and dismember a moving image is a different experience from simply watching such an event on screen”.
The Mana Bar is the first dedicated cocktail bar in the world to provide permanent current generation video game systems to its patrons, and includes many playable titles that are rated as violent and adult in nature. In the 4 weeks since the bar has opened, there has not been a single violent incident caused by any of its patrons. There has not been a single forceful ejection from the venue due to undue intoxication. There have only been 3 glasses broken in the entire period of operation, all by accident.
This is from a venue located in the heart of Brisbanes Fortitude Valley Entertainment Precinct.
“The Mana Bar applauds the majority of the parliamentary report’s recommendations and its call for strategies to determine the effects of violent video games” says Mana Bar owner Guy ‘Yug’ Blomberg, “but making broad sweeping statements about the effects of violent video games based on ‘hypothesises’ does nothing more than to tarnish an industry that is beginning to be accepted as a mature entertainment medium.”
The Queensland Government should also include the Mana Bar in their future studies, as a venue that combines the consumption of alcohol with the interaction of violent video games – resulting in no violent behaviour.
